Earth Day 2023: Upper Nyack’s Renewable Electricity Program

As we celebrate Earth Month 2023, Upper Nyack is proud of our environmental accomplishments this year.  Village participation in a community based clean energy program, Rockland Community Power, is a big part of what we achieved together this year in terms of reducing our climate emissions.  This program also provides strong consumer protection and rate stability.

Upper Nyack is one of six Rockland communities that have joined together in the Rockland Community Power program, a collaborative municipal clean energy program.  New York State has set ambitious goals to transition quickly to renewable electricity. By 2030, the electric grid in New York State must be powered 70% by renewable energy – and it must be 100% carbon free by 2040.  The question is, how do we meet these ambitious goals – and how do we do so while stabilizing electric rates, which can be volatile?  Participation in this program helps our community take a major step in the direction of meeting these important goals.

In the previous round of this program, over 21,000 households in all six participating communities switched to 100% NY renewable electricity while also saving money on their electricity bills. That’s a big deal – and it takes a big bite out of our carbon footprint as a community.

Over the course of the previous two-year program, Upper Nyack participants were able to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1,060 metric tons CO2.  That’s the same impact as 17,527 tree seedlings grown for ten years.  Village participants also saved over $172,730 collectively.
